The new film “Mr. Jones” is based on real events. It tells the story of Welsh journalist Gareth Jones, who traveled to Soviet Ukraine and first reported on the 1932-33 man-made famine — today known as the Holodomor — for the Western press. Breaking the Soviet rules for foreign correspondents, Jones slips into Ukraine to discover the mass starvation the Soviet authorities wanted to keep secret. It would ultimately kill millions of Ukrainians. Throughout his trip, Jones experiences the struggles of the local people — he himself suffers from hunger, eats bark and freezes in the frigid winter weather.
