President Petro Poroshenko has congratulated Ukrainians on Trinity Sunday, or Pentecost, a church holiday that commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles gathered in a house on Mount Zion in Jerusalem. The day is considered the birthday of the Orthodox Church, and has been solemnly celebrated as such since ancient times.

In a statement published on his official website, Poroshenko said the holiday symbolizes the unity and eternal victory of truth and hope. Poroshenko said that he believes that with the help of God, Ukrainians will overcome historical challenges they face today. Throughout his political career, Poroshenko has stressed his affiliation with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church headquartered in Moscow.
