Scientists from Ukraine’s Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics (IMBG) could provide one of the quickest responses to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ukraine. By mid-February, they had already developed a test system for COVID-19, and the government funded the initial research and production of the first 1,000 tests. But six weeks later, the Ukrainian government had not given IMBG funding for mass production of their test, and instead spent time and money on test systems from other countries. Just recently the Ukrainian government ordered tests produced by domestic manufacturers. The IMBG chief Mykhailo Tukalo explains the two main differences that make Ukrainian tests more efficient for Ukraine.
