You're reading: SBU: Charges brought against suspects in Makiivka bombings

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has brought charges against those suspected of causing January's blasts in Makiivka, Donetsk region, the SBU press center reported on April 7.

The investigative office of the SBU department in Donetsk region completed the investigation into the criminal case in connection with the bombings in Makiivka.

"During the investigation, charges were brought against two residents of Donetsk region, who have currently finished examining the materials of the criminal cases [against them]," reads a report.

According to the report, as part of the pretrial investigation a range of relevant events were conducted, in particular, over 30 expert studies and 20 face-to-face meetings.

"On April 7, the materials of the case were sent to the prosecutor’s office of Donetsk region for the approval of indictment for further transfer to the courts," the SBU reported.

As reported, two explosions rocked the town of Makiivka in Donetsk region on January 20. The first blast took place outside the office building of the state owned coal enterprise Makiivvuhillia, while the second explosion happened near the Golden Plaza shopping mall. No one was killed or injured in the incidents. A note was found at the scene of one of the blasts, in which the bombers allegedly demanded EUR 4.2 million from well-known people in Makiivka.

SBU Chief Valeriy Khoroshkovsky said that a criminal case on the blasts had been opened under the article on terrorism.

On February 15, the law enforcers reported that two suspects aged 23 and 24 were detained in connection with an attack on a taxi driver in Makiivka. During questionings these people confirmed their involvement in organizing blasts in the city on January 20.
