You're reading: Penitentiary Service: Lutsenko does not have hepatitis

The Ukrainian Penitentiary Service has denied claims by former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko that he could have possibly contracted hepatitis.

The latest medical examination carried out by specialists from the Kyiv City Emergency Aid Clinical Hospital revealed that, as of 5:00 p.m.

July 19, information on the presence of hepatitis in former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko was untrue, the Penitentiary Service said, citing a Kyiv-based pretrial detention center where Lutsenko is being held.

At the same time, the pretrial detention center’s administration said that, in line with recommendations by specialists from the Kyiv City Emergency Aid Clinical Hospital, Lutsenko will undergo an expanded clinical and laboratory examination on July 20 to clarify his health status.

Media had reported earlier that Lutsenko had said last week that he had been preliminarily diagnosed as having hepatitis.

"Preliminary diagnoses have been confirmed, and likelihood of hepatitis has been declared. My organism is failing me. I am having problems with my pancreas and liver. Hence, I have begun taking medicines and am trying to observe a diet somehow," Lutsenko said.

"Frankly speaking, contracting such a disease for half a year in a cell is an unpleasant surprise to me. This is among the worst things you can get in prison," he said.
