Ukraine has received $13 billion in financial aid from top international allies since Russia’s invasion began, a senior official at the National Bank of Ukraine has said.
The Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine, Serhiy Nikolaychuk, commenting on international aid in an interview he gave to the BBC said: “The international aid intensified at the end of June. Thanks to this, Ukraine received about $4.4 billion in June and in the first days of July. In total, since the beginning of the war, the country has received almost $13 billion in aid,” he said.
Nikolaychuk pointed out that the war is an expensive operation as the government spends notable funds on security and defence, on buying equipment and weapons and on the salaries of transport and service members.
The NBU representative summed up further: “That’s why international financial aid does help Ukraine a lot in this war. It also makes it possible to reduce emission financing of the state budget”.
As reported, since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in Ukraine the gross amount of aid, declared and actually provided, from international partners is $30 million, as of mid-June.
There have been some big providers. The United Kingdom, for example, has provided up to £2.3 billion in solely military support for Kyiv since the war began, according to data from the British government.
The UK has played a fundamental role in supporting Ukraine, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson being extremely vocal about his ambitions to assist President Zelensky.
Another major provider of aid is the U.S., which has sent huge funds to cover emergency support, food assistance, health services and more to Ukrainian refugees both in and out of the country. This aid money is combined with the traditional aid package which was approved by congress in March 2022.
According to data of the U.S. Agency for International Development, this is the highest amount of money provided to the U.S. than any other country in the last 10 years. President Biden displayed his support for Ukraine in a press conference in Poland. Addressing the public, he said “Putin can and must end this war. The American people stand with you and the brave citizens of Ukraine who want peace.”
