In a thrilling comeback fight Ukrainian boxer, Vasyl Lomachenko won on the basis of a unanimous decision against Jamaine Ortiz, the BBC and other media reported on Oct. 30.
According to the BBC, “The former unified world lightweight champion joined his country’s war effort after it was invaded by Russia. He beat the American by scorecards of 115-113, 116-112 and 117-111 at Madison Square Garden in New York.”
The Guardian notes that Lomachenko returned to his country from Greece “after it was invaded in February and joined a territorial defense battalion, patrolling the streets to enforce a 10pm curfew.”
During the fight, he wore “trunks that looked like military camouflage with Ukraine’s blue-and-yellow flag along the side of the belt.”
Having secured his victory, the Guardian said the two-time Olympic gold medalist “is headed home to Ukraine, ready to resume military service during his country’s war with Russia.”
Lomachenko was born in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, in the Odesa region.
