Ukrainian tennis player Lesia Tsurenko reached the quarterfinal at the United States Open Tennis Championships, defeating the Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova on Sept. 4.

Tsurenko, 29, beat Vondrousova with a score of 6-7, 7-5, 6-2. The match lasted 2 hours and 32 minutes.

Tsurenko is currently 36th in the Women’s Tennis Association ranking.

The first set started well for Tsurenko. She made an early break, leading 3-0. But when the score reached 4-1, Vondrousova managed to get back in the game and started playing more confidently, bringing it to a tie. On the tiebreak, Vondrousova beat Tsurenko and won the first set with a score of 6-7.

In the second set, Vondrousova led 2-0, but Tsurenko raised the score to 2-2. In the 10th game, Tsurenko had the serve but didn’t win. After a few minutes, the Ukrainian got one more break and won the set with a score of 7-5.

The last set was lucky for Tsurenko – she made four breaks in a row and lost only one serve, winning the third set with a score of 6-2 in her favor.

Tsurenko will now go on to the quarterfinal at the U.S. Open, in which she is competing for the first time in her career. There, she will head off against Japan’s Naomi Osaka.
