You're reading: Over 2,000 people rescued in 166 emergencies, 83,000 fires in 2017

The rescuers of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU) liquidated 166 emergency situations at the state, regional, local and facility levels and put out 83,000 fires in 2017, SESU Head Mykola Chechotkin has said.

“In 2017, the SESU’s response units ensured prompt response to 166 emergency situations, which in terms of their scale were split into national (two), regional (eight), local (69) and facility (87) emergency situations,” he said on February 2, while reporting on the main results of the service’s activities last year.

A total of 172 people, including 29 children, were killed in these emergency situations, and 892 people, including 417 children, were injured. At the same time, the death rate shrank by 6 percent in comparison with 2016, and the injury rate fell by over 50 percent.

Chechotkin noted that in 2017, there was a 39 percent reduction in the number of emergency situations related to fires and explosions. At the same time, the number of road accidents grew by 45.5 percent, and the number of accidents on life support systems rose by 75 percent.

The greatest number of emergencies in 2017 was recorded in Donetsk (24) and Odesa (13) regions, in Kyiv (12), Kharkiv (ten) and Rivne (ten) regions, as well as in Kherson (nine) and Cherkasy (nine) regions.

Chechotkin also said that in 2017, the SESU ensured prompt response to 83,166 fires, rescuing 2,377 people, including 244 children.
