Illegal armed formations violated an agreement on New Year and Christmas ceasefire, attacking Ukrainian positions in the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) zone in eastern Ukraine in the Svitlodarsk arc at noon on Saturday, Spokesman of the ATO headquarters Vasyl Labai has told Interfax-Ukraine.

“About an hour ago, the enemy carried out a provocative shelling of our positions in the Svitlodarsk arc, using infantry fighting vehicles, grenade launchers and mortars,” he said.

At the same time, Labai said that the ATO forces did not open fire in response.

“This shelling did not threaten the lives of our servicemen, but we are always ready to give an adequate response to these provocations,” he said.

In his turn, Ukrainian Defense Ministry spokesman Oleksandr Motuzianyk said at a briefing in Kyiv on Saturday that Ukrainian servicemen observe the New Year-Christmas truce in the ATO area and are ready to continue the regime during the holidays.

“The Ukrainian Armed Forces monitor the situation in the area of carrying out ATO and are ready, as always, to observe the ceasefire regime, in festive times in particular,” he said.
