You're reading: Bill on repealing language law registered in Rada

A draft law on the recognition of the law “On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language” as such that has lost its force has been submitted to the Verkhovna Rada.

Corresponding draft law (No. 10459) was submitted by members of the Opposition Bloc faction Vadym Novynsky, Oleksandr Vilkul and Yevhen Murayev, the official website of the Parliament reported.

The bill was registered on July 16. Currently, the text of the bill is absent on the website of the Rada.

According to the press service of the party on Facebook, the “language law” violates the norms in terms of guarantees for the development of Russian and other minority languages and in terms of the prohibition of discrimination.

“In addition, the language bill was adopted with gross violations. Andriy Parubiy, chairing the meeting, put it to a vote, violating the procedure clearly described by the Regulations. Also, numerous facts of non-personal voting of MPs were recorded,” the message reads.

As reported, on April 25, the Verkhovna Rada adopted at the second reading and in general a bill on the language law. The parliamentarians had been considering amendments to the document in plenary sessions for almost two months – from February 28.

On May 15, the fifth president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed the language law, noting its exceptional balance.

On July 16, the law came into force (with the exception of certain provisions).

On June 21, the Constitutional Court (CC) of Ukraine received a constitutional motion by 51 deputies regarding compliance with the Basic Law (constitutionality) of the law “On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as a state language.”

The authors of the motion are the deputies of the Rada from the Opposition Bloc Oleksandr Dolzhenkov and co-chairman of the Opposition Bloc faction in the Rada Vadym Novynsky.
