You're reading: Bolton – US will work with Ukraine to prevent Russian interference in elections

United States National Security Advisor John Bolton said on Aug. 24 that the United States is ready to cooperate with the Ukrainian government to prevent Russia from interfering in the upcoming Ukrainian elections.

“President Poroshenko and I discussed this issue … I informed him that we had told the Russians why they should not interfere in the elections of the U.S. and Ukraine … We publicly discussed this issue in Washington, what measures should be taken to prevent the intervention of the Russian Federation and other countries,” Bolton said at a briefing in Kyiv.

As for what concrete form these “measures” would take, Bolton named “security channels”, and more vaguely, “other mechanisms”.

The White House itself only formally affirmed the assessment of the U.S. intelligence community on July 31 that Russia had meddled in the national elections. The Department of Homeland Security and the Office of National Intelligence on Election Security first accused Moscow on Oct. 7, 2016 of hacking the emails of U.S. officials.
