British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he briefed U.S. President Joe Biden regarding his weekend meeting in Kyiv with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

He said on Twitter: “Our joint focus [with U.S. President Joe Biden] remains on supporting President Zelensky and the Ukrainian people in their fight for freedom…[Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s barbaric venture cannot be allowed to succeed.”

Johnson paid a surprise, unannounced visit on April 9 where he toured Kyiv’s empty city streets in the center. During the visit, he promised to send new anti-vessel missile systems and 120 armored vehicles to Ukraine.

“Ukraine has defied the odds and pushed back Russian forces from the gates of Kyiv, achieving the greatest feat of arms of the 21st century,” Britain’s prime minister said in a statement then.

London has been one of Kyiv’s fiercest backers militarily and financially since Putin ordered a renewed invasion of the country.

On March 24 announced the provision of an additional 6,000 new defensive missiles on top of 4,200 previously provided NLAW tank killer weapons. Ahead of a NATO summit that day, The Guardian reported that Britain was also providing an additional 25 million pounds in financial assistance.
