The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved a strategy to improve road safety in Ukraine until 2024.

The appropriate resolution was adopted at a government meeting on Oct. 21.

The Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine together with other concerned executive authorities was instructed to develop and submit to the Cabinet of Ministers a draft plan of actions on the implementation of this strategy within three months.

According to an explanatory note, the goal of this strategy is to reduce the mortality rate caused by road traffic accidents by at least 30% until 2024 and by 50% until 2030, reduce the severity of consequences of road traffic accidents for road users and reduce social economic losses from road traffic injuries, as well as introduce an effective road safety management system.

According to the Ministry of Infrastructure, today in Ukraine the mortality and injury rate caused by road accidents is very high, and the level of road safety organization remains very low, as the reports of experts from international institutions mentioned. In 2019, more than 160,600 road accidents with victims were registered in Ukraine, in which 3,400 people died and 32,700 were injured. In 2019, the number of accidents and victims increased by 6.4% as compared to 2018.

According to the accident rate and the consequences of road accidents, Ukraine is one of the leaders among European countries. So, on average, in the EU member states, 5% out of 100,000 inhabitants died in road accidents, while in Ukraine this figure is (according to 2019 data), respectively, 8.22%.
