You're reading: Co-chairman of Ukraine-NATO Interparliamentary Council Ojars Kalnins dies

Ojars Kalnins, the co-chairman of the Ukraine-NATO Interparliamentary Council (UNIC), has died, Yehor Chernev (the Servant of the People faction), the head of the permanent delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, has reported.

“Today he is gone … A great friend of Ukraine has left,” Chernev wrote on his Facebook page on Oct. 15 night.

He noted that without the participation of Kalnins, not a single event concerning Ukraine took place within the framework of the NATO PA.

“And his position has always been clear and firm: the Russian Federation is an aggressor and must bear responsibility for everything that has done in Ukraine, and Ukraine must become a NATO member,” Chernev wrote.

He also noted that Kalnins was the co-chairman of the informal support group for the Crimea Platform in the NATO PA and the initiator of the creation of a support group for the Crimea Platform in the Latvian Saeima, the first among all parliaments.
