You're reading: Court leaves ex-minister Kozhara in jail until March 5 with possibility of bail

The Kyiv-Sviatoshynsky court, considering the case of the murder of businessman Serhiy Starytsky, where the former Foreign Minister of Ukraine Leonid Kozhara is involved, left the suspect in jail until March 5 with the possibility of a bail of Hr 14 million.

“Kozhara was left in jail until March 5 with the possibility of posting a bail of Hr 14 million (the same as before). Judge Kozak took into account and admitted proof of his guilt in the murder, which means that there is undeniable evidence of his guilt in the case. The judge granted the prosecutor’s motion and acknowledged that Kozhara should be in custody because he could evade justice or influence the court and other participants,” daughter of the deceased businessman Kateryna Starytska wrote on Facebook on Dec. 5 evening.

As reported, on February 21, 2020, the special line “102” received a message from a resident of Chaiky village, Kyiv region, that a man who had come to visit from the capital committed suicide in the house. Later it was reported that businessman Serhiy Starytsky was shot dead in Kozhara’s house. The preliminary version of the police was suicide. The shot was fired from a Jericho 941 pistol, registered to the ex-Foreign Minister.

Starytsky co-founded Atlantic Group in 1992. Starytsky’s professional assets also include the management of the Inter TV channel and the Department of International Relations of the Ukrainian State TV and Radio Company.

On February 24, the National Police announced that the death of businessman Staritsky was being investigated as premeditated murder. It was reported that the police have previously established the presence of three people in the house: spouses and their guest. All three drank alcoholic beverages. According to the woman, she was in another room when the guest shot himself in the head with the owner’s pistol.

On March 25, Deputy Interior Minister Anton Gerashchenko reported that Kozhara had been detained on suspicion of the premeditated murder of Starytsky.
