You're reading: Court upholds claim for causing damage to environment by RusAl’s Mykolaiv Alumina Refinery

The Zavodsky District Court of Mykolaiv has uphold a claim of nongovernmental organization Stop Shlam (Sludge) for recovering UAH 9.2 billion from Mykolaiv Alumina Refinery LLC for causing damage to the environment and the health of residents.

According to the information of the NGO on Facebook, the Zavodsky District Court of Mykolaiv satisfied the claim of NGO Stop Shlam, which acts in the interests of its 1,279 members, and ruled to recover from the refinery more than UAH 9.2 billion for moral damage.

The court decision was made on May 26, 2021.

According to the document, the court decided to collect UAH 9.209 billion from the Mykolaiv Alumina Refinery in favor of the members of the NGO.

Thus, Mykolaiv Alumina Refinery shall compensate UAH 7 million each to members of the NGO.

As of the end of Friday, May 28, 2021, the document in the unified public register of court decisions has not been made public. The full text of the decision in the register shall appear within 10 days after the court issues a verdict. Mykolaiv Alumina Refinery has the right to appeal this decision.

Chairman of Stop Shlam Vasyl Orel said that they were seeking a court decision “to put things in order, so that we were less poisoned, so that we breathe clean fresh air.”
