Currently, 23,000 COVID-19 patients are undergoing treatment in Ukrainian hospitals, Minister of Health Maksym Stepanov reported during the morning briefing on Jan. 4. There are 66,000 beds in the country’s hospitals for treating such patients, but only 76% of them have oxygen equipment needed for severe cases.
In the past 24 hours, Ukrainian laboratories have carried out 11,021 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests and 2,107 antibody tests. Over 5.62 million PCR tests have been conducted since the start of the pandemic.
The largest numbers of new cases have been recorded in Zaporizhia Oblast (528), Lviv Oblast (352), Mykolayiv Oblast (314), Kyiv Oblast (301), and the city of Kyiv (504).
The Ministry of Health introduces a new lockdown on Jan. 8–24 to reduce the burden on hospitals when the number of COVID-19 and flu cases is expected to increase. All but essential businesses will be shut down. Pharmacies, groceries, gas stations, banks, postal operators, public transport, domestic/international travel and hotels will keep working.

On Dec. 30, the President’s Office stated that Ukraine’s Ministry of Health had signed a contract for the country to receive 1.9 million doses of the coronavirus vaccine produced by China’s Sinovac Biotech “in the shortest possible term.” Each dose will be purchased for Hr 504 ($18).
