You're reading: COVID-19 in Ukraine: 5,038 new cases, 51 new deaths, 2,606 recoveries

Ukraine has registered 5,038 new cases of COVID-19 as of 9 a.m. on Jan. 2, bringing the total number of cases in the country since the start of the pandemic to nearly 1.07 million.

In the past 24 hours, 2,606 have recovered, and 51 have died.

A total of 722,615 patients have recovered and 18,731 have died in Ukraine since the beginning of the pandemic.

In the past 24 hours, Ukrainian laboratories have carried out 14,975 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests and 2,955 antibody tests. Over 5.6 million PCR tests have been conducted since the start of the pandemic.

The Ministry of Health is planning to impose a lockdown from Jan. 8 through Jan. 24 when it expects the burden on the country’s hospitals to increase due to COVID-19 and flu cases. The lockdown shuts down all but essential businesses. Unaffected are pharmacies, groceries, gas stations, banks, postal operators, public transport, domestic/international travel and hotels.

On Dec. 30, the President’s Office stated that Ukraine’s Ministry of Health had signed a contract for the country to receive 1.9 million doses of the coronavirus vaccine produced by China’s Sinovac Biotech “in the shortest possible term.” Each dose will be purchased for Hr 504 (just under $18).
