- Kyiv confirmed the delivery of US-made Javelin antitank missiles, following a similar confirmation yesterday from US officials. Defense Minister General Stepan Poltorak said Ukraine’s military will start training with the missiles this week.
- Treasure hunters got more than they bargained for on April 29 when they uncovered an illegal stash of grenades and ammunition on Kyiv‘s Trukhaniv Island. The find follows several grenade attacks in the city, including one in a moving car over the weekend.
- PrivatBank has written off over $200 million in bad loans that were issued before the bank was nationalized. The bank was nationalized amid rumors of massive insider lending; the Cabinet of Ministers has said it doesn’t expect these bad loans to be repaid anytime soon.
- The New York Times obtained a list of questions special counsel Robert Mueller wants US President Donald Trump to answer, as investigations into collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia continue. Questions about Ukraine were on the list. Trump called the leak ‘disgraceful.‘
- Jan Koum, cofounder of WhatsApp, quit Facebook after clashes with the parent company over strategy and attempts to weaken its encryption. The Ukrainian-American, whose net worth is estimated at over $19 billion, was one of the strongest advocates for privacy in Facebook.
- Political prisoner and Crimean Tartar activist Uzeir Abdullaev was moved to a prison medical unit, a day after human rights activists reported that his sepsis could soon be fatal. The EU delegation condemned the treatment of Abdullaev today on Facebook. Abdullaev’s mother, a doctor, says the prison’s medical facilities are inadequate and her son needs a hospital.
