The number of COVID-19 cases is growing in the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk region, hospitals are 100% full, Commissioner for Human Rights Liudmyla Denisova said.

“I received information about the growing incidence of COVID-19 in the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk region. Almost 100% occupancy of local hospitals increases the burden on doctors, thereby complicating difficult conditions in which they work for the past year and a half,” Denisova wrote on Facebook.

According to her, about 500-700 new cases of diseases are recorded in the region every day. Most hospitalized patients were not vaccinated against COVID-19.

In addition, local authorities use the Russian vaccine [Sputnik V], which has not been approved and was suspended by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Denisova called on international humanitarian organizations that have access to the temporarily occupied areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions to focus on the situation, as well as to help provide locals with COVID-19 tests, WHO-approved vaccines, medicines and personal protective equipment.

“I urge my fellow citizens living in the temporarily occupied territories to be attentive to their health and, if possible, get vaccinated in the territory controlled by the government of Ukraine,” the ombudsperson said.
