You're reading: Dnipro scientists invent device for safe disposal of medical waste

Scientists of the Dnipro Polytechnic have created a mobile unit for medical waste disposal, which requires a minimum of fuel and does not harm the environment and can process 50 kilograms of medical “waste” in an hour, the press service of Dnipropetrovsk Regional State Administration reported.

“Such a device is indispensable during the pandemic, when the amount of used personal protective equipment is constantly increasing. For example, Dnipropetrovsk Regional Hospital named after Mechnikov accumulates up to 50 kg of medical waste in just a week of work,” the message says.

As reported, while working on the device, scientists took into account the specifics of medical waste, which is often a hotbed of infection.

“Therefore, the main stage of utilization of such “garbage” is burning at 800 degrees. To minimize emissions into the atmosphere, gases released are additionally burned,” reported the message.

Inventors say that the device runs on any of the available fuels, while the costs are minimal.

“The required 800 degrees in the ‘oven’ are reached in only 2 minutes. And all the medical waste in a week at Mechnikov Regional Hospital, for example, can be burned in an hour,” the press service said.

“The idea to create the device was given by Peruvian colleagues. In their country, there are problems with the disposal of medical waste, and they ordered us to develop such a device. And now German scientists are also interested in the invention. But, of course, I would like it to be used by our doctors in the first place,” said the head of the Dnipro Polytechnic developers group, Roman Dychkovsky.

Now scientists from Dnipropetrovsk region develop an automated control system for the device.
