Kyrylo Bykovskiy, a soldier with Ukraine’s 10th Mountain Assault Brigade, was killed by an enemy sniper in the war zone of Donbas, becoming the country’s fifth combat-related fatality in March alone.

This latest deadly attack occurred late on March 20th near the front line town of Shymy close to the occupied city of Horlivka.

The soldier took a shot in his right shoulder, which turned out to be fatal, according to the military.

Bykovskiy, 28, died as his fellow soldiers were evacuating him to the nearest medical unit.

The soldier’s home city of Kropivnytskiy has declared March 24 a day of mourning, when Bykovskiy is going to be paid his last respects at the local cemetery’s Valley of Soldiers’ Glory.

“National flags all across the city will be lowered,” the city authorities announced on March 22. “Additionally, restrictions will be imposed on entertainment events.”

The latest incident is the 18th confirmed combat-related casualty sustained by Ukrainian troops in Donbas since the latest armistice with Russian-led militants began on July 27.
