You're reading: Energy Ministry notes stability of Ukraine’s power system

The Integrated Power System of Ukraine operates stably, despite being behind the schedule of coal accumulation at warehouses of thermal power plants (TPPs), the Ministry of Energy believes.

At the same time, the ministry said on the website on Oct. 25, that basic generation, which currently produces more than half of all electricity on an even schedule, is nuclear, and maneuvering is carried out due to thermal and hydroelectric generation, the capacity of which is sufficient for the stable operation of the power system.

The Ministry of Energy drew attention to the fact that increasing coal accumulation indicators in the schedule updated in August, the ministry proceeded from the most critical scenario – the launch of Nord Stream 2 and very low temperatures in winter.

According to the dispatching information of NPC Ukrenergo, as of the evening of Oct. 25, 13 power units of TPPs of Centrenergo are idle due to lack of fuel; only one power unit operates at each of three TPPs of the generating company: Vuhlehirska, Zmiyivska and Trypilska TPPs with a total capacity of about 650 MW.

For the same reason, Sloviansk TPP of PJSC Donbasenergo was completely shut down.

At the same time, due to lack of coal, three units of DTEK Energy TPPs are not operating: one at Kryvy Rih TPP and two at Zaporizhia TPP. In total, about 30 power units of the company are in operation, including eight units of Burshtyn TPP.

As for nuclear power plants (NPPs), 11 out of 15 nuclear power units are in operation: three units of Rivne NPP, four units of Zaporizhia NPP, and two each at Yuzhnoukrainsk and Khmelnytsky NPPs. The total capacity is over 10 GW.

According to the Ministry of Energy, on the morning of Oct. 25, coal reserves at TPPs and CHPPs amounted to 701,300 tonnes, which is almost 52,000 tonnes less than a week earlier (on Oct. 18 – 752,900 tonnes). According to the accumulation schedule, there should be 2.97 million tonnes of coal as of the indicated date.
