In November, Ukraine plans to import 562,000 tonnes of coal, of which about 200,000 tonnes will be supplied to PJSC Centrenergo, the Ministry of Energy said.

“According to information provided by thermal generation companies, it is planned to import 562,000 tonnes of coal in November, of which about 200,000 tonnes will be supplied by Centrenergo,” the Ministry of Energy said on the website on Oct. 28.

According to the ministry, in October, Centrenergo imported 30,100 tonnes of coal.

The total volume of imports on October 28 is 216,500 tonnes, the press release notes.

As reported, according to a member of the Centrenergo directorate Volodymyr Haluschak, the company has contracted about 1.5 million tonnes of imported coal, of which it plans to receive 1-1.1 million tonnes for the period of October 2021-March 2022.

At the same time, he drew attention to the fact that Centrenergo, similarly to DTEK, is facing problems with the purchase of coal, given its shortage on world markets.

In early October, DTEK Executive Director Dmytro Sakharuk noted that coal has to be purchased amid an extremely tense situation in foreign markets, in particular, due to the huge coal shortage that China is experiencing, which has seriously aggravated the situation in foreign markets and complicated its purchase for the needs of Ukrainian generation.

At the same time, earlier DTEK (Zakhidenergo, Dniproenergo, Skhidenergo) previously announced about contracting about 500,000 tonnes of coal, including from Poland – 320,000 tonnes, and the United States – 150,000 tonnes. The company has not yet disclosed the volumes of coal supplies from Russia and Kazakhstan.

Ukraine over nine months of 2021 increased coal production by 3.7%, having decreased it by 19.1% in September.
