You're reading: EU delegation: Ukraine has trustworthy access to radiation monitoring

The emergency crisis team and the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate in Ukraine are monitoring the radiological situation in Kyiv region and beyond using the RODOS Decision Support System, the EU delegation to Ukraine said in a press release circulated on April 17.

“This system allows performing detailed forecast calculations of the movement path of potentially contaminated clouds along the northern borders of Ukraine. This system is trustworthy and meets all international standards. Everybody can access accurate information about the situation on the website: https://sstc.ua/news,” it said.

The RODOS system has been developed in the EU and provided by the European Commission to Ukraine in the framework of its nuclear safety assistance programs. The European Union is a long-standing partner of the Ukrainian authorities in addressing the consequences of the Chornobyl accident that destroyed the fourth nuclear reactor in 1986.

“In that framework, the European Commission has provided the monitoring equipment, the necessary software and training that Ukraine is routinely using to assess the radiological situation in the exclusion zone around Chornobyl and the whole country. This system is connected to the European radiological monitoring system sharing real-time information between the participating countries,” the EU Delegation said.

Ukraine can benefit also from the EU’s Copernicus satellite system that enables to get precise satellite images of the forest fires that started on April 4.
