Leaders of the European Union at the Ukraine-EU summit will present a package of additional, special measures of support for the Azov region, a high-ranking European diplomat said.

Speaking at a briefing in Brussels on Friday prior to the summit, the diplomat recalled that EU representatives visited the region in January this year. “As the results of the visit, the leaders will announce the first concrete support measures (in the region), and opening a Project Office in Mariupol will increase the EU presence in the region,” he stated.

At the same time, the diplomat stressed it would a set of additional measures.

“We are already in the region with humanitarian aid, economic assistance. Now we will increase targeted assistance in the region, in particular, in the Sea of Azov area in order to resolve infrastructure problems with roads, railways, what could be the future of the port of Berdyansk. We are also trying to support economic diversification,” the diplomat gave details.

In addition, the EU’s assistance will focus on demining in the region that “is the world’s largest in size.”

“We will make additional funds available for mine clearance,” he added.
