You're reading: EU to consider provision of second MFA tranche after Kyiv meets conditions

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy during his working visit to the European Union and NATO institutions met European Commission Vice-President for the Euro and Social Dialogue Valdis Dombrovskis and discussed practical issues of cooperation between Ukraine and the EU in the financial and economic spheres.

According to the Vice-President of the European Commission, the European Union will finalize the consideration of providing Ukraine with the second tranche in the amount of 500 million euro under the fourth EU macro-financial assistance (MFA) program as soon as the relevant requirements to receive it are met by the Ukrainian side, the press service of the head of state reported late on June 4.

Given the victory of the pro-European political forces in the recent elections to the European Parliament, Dombrovskis expressed confidence in maintaining solidarity regarding Ukraine in the future composition of the European Commission and the European Council.

As reported, in September representatives of Ukraine and the European Union signed a memorandum of understanding and a loan agreement on the issue of the fourth EU macro-financial assistance program to Ukraine (MFA IV) for 1 billion euro. The first tranche of 500 million euro was sent to Ukraine by the European Commission in December 2018.

On March 1, 2019, Ukrainian Finance Minister Oksana Markarova after a meeting with Dombrovskis said that Ukraine had fulfilled more than half of the commitments required to receive the second tranche of MFA IV in the amount of 500 million euro.

Dombrovskis then said during the meeting that the EC supports the government’s efforts to implement priority reforms, understands the importance of receiving the next tranche for Ukraine due to a high debt burden and the planned payments on external obligations.
