On Dec. 15, Ukraine made the penultimate step towards realizing a multigenerational dream of attaining church independence. Inside the St. Sophia Cathedral, bishops from the three disunited Orthodox Churches in Ukraine convened to elect the Primate who would head the future United Church and receive the long-awaited Tomos of church autocephaly from the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.
