Dmytro Viniarsky was 9 when the communists staged the Holodomor, a genocidal famine though to have taken the lives of at least 4 million Ukrainians. In his story collected by Kyiv’s Holodomor Museum, he tells about how their family survived by cooking gophers, and how the Soviet activists managed to confiscate absolutely everything edible with sharpened metal sticks.
