BRUSSELS – The European Commission is ready to fulfill a mediating role in the gas dispute between Russia and Ukraine if they so wish, the EC’s spokesperson for climate action and energy, Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, has said.

“Gas flows to the European Union are stable and normal,” she said at a briefing in Brussels on March 6 when asked to comment on gas supplies to the EU due to the conflict between Gazprom and Naftogaz.

At the same time, she recalled that over the past few days two statements had been issued on this situation on behalf of Vice-President of the European Commission Maros Scefcovic, who had contacts with the energy ministers of Russia and Ukraine to clarify the circumstances.
