European Parliament Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) on Dec. 8 will consider the issue of approval the suspension mechanism for a visa-free regime, which will pave the way for the provision of a visa-free regime for Ukrainian citizens, the Ukrainian representative in the humanitarian subgroup of the Contact Group, Iryna Gerashchenko, said.

“This will pave the way to a further vote of the European Parliament at the plenary session. We will appeal to our European colleagues to vote the issue this year, on the last session week,” Gerashchenko wrote on her Facebook page on Dec. 8 morning.

As reported, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that a compromise solution had been found in Brussels to suspend visa waivers. Poroshenko said that now it is the turn of the Council of the European Union at the ambassadorial level and the European Parliament.

As reported, the Committee of Permanent Representatives to the EU (Coreper) on behalf of the EU Council on Thursday reached an agreement on a position in the talks on the liberalization of visa regime for Ukraine. As noted in the issued EU communiqué, the Committee confirmed the European Commission’s proposal to provide a visa free regime for Ukrainian citizens when traveling to the EU for a period of stay up to 90 days during the 180 day period.

The EU Council believes that the liberalization of the visa free regime for Ukraine and the new mechanism for the suspension of the EU visa free regime with third countries should simultaneously come into effect.
