The prosecutor’s office in court announced the indictment to former deputy head of the department for ensuring mass events of the public security department of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine in Kyiv Yuriy Spaskykh, in excess of his powers in dispersing protesters and organizing murders during the EuroMaidan Revolution.

At a session of Holosiivsky District Court of Kyiv on Oct. 20, the prosecutor in the process read out the indictment against the Spaskykh.

“Spaskykh gave an illegal order to Berkut (former special police battalion) about pushing back citizens who exercised their right to the peaceful assembly from Institutska Street. Following the order, the special forces used brute force and special equipment. Some 12 protesters were wounded. Thus, Spaskykh is accused of committing deliberate acts that clearly go beyond the limits of official authority and were accompanied by violence,” the prosecutor said.

According to the prosecutor, on Feb. 18, 2014, Spaskykh, together with the leadership of the police, “organized the commission of the deliberate murder of two or more persons by law enforcement officers.”

Spaskykh, who has been under arrest since September 2021 after being detained on the territory of Ukraine, took part in the session via videoconference. Answering the questions of the court, he said that he does not admit accusation, as well as the civil claims brought in the case.

The next hearing on the Spaskykh’ charges will take place on Nov. 2.
