You're reading: Ex-President Petro Poroshenko tests positive for COVID-19

Ex-President Petro Poroshenko has contracted COVID-19, he stated on Sept. 29.

He wasn’t hospitalized and is receiving treatment at home.

“Bad time (for such news). I’m really sorry that I have to suspend my trips to the regions,” Poroshenko said.

Poroshenko tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the local elections scheduled for Oct. 25 in Ukraine. Although Poroshenko, now a lawmaker, doesn’t personally run for office in these elections, he has been actively campaigning for his European Solidarity party, whose representatives run for local councils and mayoral offices around Ukraine.

Poroshenko’s wife, Maryna Poroshenko, is running for Kyiv city council. It’s unknown if she has contracted the disease too.

Poroshenko is not the only politician who recently tested positive for COVID-19. On Sept. 29, head of the Voice party Kira Rudyk tested positive for the coronavirus and said she’d have to work remotely from now on.

Yulia Tymoshenko, ex-prime minister and Batkivshchyna Party leader, also contracted the disease in late August. She announced that she recovered on Sept. 11.
