The defense counsel protecting Ukrainian journalist from the Ukrinform news agency Roman Sushchenko, illegally arrested in Russia, intends to appeal his arrest in the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), lawyer Mark Feygin said.

The lawyer said on the air of the 112.Ukraina TV Channel that the Moscow City Court (Russia) will consider a complaint against the arrest of Sushchenko on October 27, but his defense has no illusions in this regard.

“The court proceedings will be closed. The chances to change the pretrial restriction are slim. However, it is very important as we are going to appeal it in the European court,” Feygin said.

He said there were procedural violations during the arrest of the Ukrainian citizen and the defense intends to appeal them.

As reported, Ukrinform correspondent Roman Sushchenko was taken into custody in Moscow on Sept. 30. The Federal Security Service said he had been charged with espionage. The Moscow Lefortovsky Court ordered the two-month arrest of Sushchenko on October 1.

Kyiv called the journalist’s detention provocation and accusations against him as alleged. The Foreign Ministry of Ukraine on October 7 had a meeting with the Russian consul with respect to the non-admission of Ukrainian consular officials to Sushchenko. He was handed a note of protest with the requirement to provide access for consular officials to the detained.
