Dnipro, January 27: A Ukrainian National Guard serviceman opened fire in a room at a state-owned machine-building factory early Thursday local time, killing five fellow servicemen and injuring five others. Three of whom remain in critical condition.

Artemiy Ryabchuk, 20, had been guarding the Pivdenmash factory in Dnipro, entered a weapons room where 22 soldiers were and began shooting before fleeing.

Volodymyr Shylov, Deputy Head of the Poltava Region’s State Bureau of Investigation, who is at the scene of the shooting, said Ryabchuk is now in detention after handing himself over voluntarily to the authorities.

Ukraine and its military remain on high alert amid the threat of invasion by Russian troops amassed close to the country’s borders.
