A giant falling flagpole crushed a Lexus SUV in Kherson on Aug. 20.
The recently installed flagpole was supposed to hoist a giant Ukrainian flag for the upcoming 30th Independence Day celebration in the city’s Park of Glory.
Local news cited unnamed sources in reporting that it was an undeclared vehicle belonging to a local official.
Kherson is a Black Sea city of about 290,000 people, 550 kilometers south of the capital.
The collapsed pole was one of 17 flagpoles that President Volodymyr Zelensky ordered installed throughout the country. The government plans to spend Hr 170.7 million on these installations, drawing upon state and local budgets.
The eastern city of Kharkiv will host the most expensive of these poles. The government plans to spend Hr 24.5 million on its installation, as well as the restoration of elements of landscaping of the green zone.
Numerous events are planned for the 30th anniversary of Ukraine.
