Kyiv’s Shevchenkivsky District Court has scheduled for August 10 a jury trial of the criminal case against Yaroslav Tarasenko and Oleksandr Los in the assassination of former member of Russia’s Duma Dmitriy Voronenkov, who was gunned down in Kyiv on March 23, 2017.

As the Kyiv-based Interfax-Ukraine news agency learnt, after a preliminary hearing the court ruled to hold a jury trial open to the public.

“[The court rules] to schedule an open hearing in Shevchenkivsky District Court for 13:30 Kyiv time on August 10. Trial by jury… Measures of restraint for the defendants … to leave unchanged until October 5,” the court ruling says.

As earlier reported, Denis Voronenkov was shot dead in the center of Kyiv on March 23, 2017.

Voronenkov’s killer, Pavlo Parshov, was shot dead at the scene of the crime in downtown Kyiv, but two persons involved in the case – Los and Tarasenko – were detained. In addition, Yaroslav Levenets, who was Parshov’s accomplice, was put on the wanted list.

Los, together with Levenets, organized the crime – he hired two drivers and the hitman. Tarasenko was the driver of the Lanos car used by the killer.

Tarasenko was detained on July 16, 2017.

In September 2017, Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko said that the person who ordered the assassination was in Russia and had active contacts with criminal circles and special services, while “executors were mostly citizens of Ukraine.”

Later it became known that a Russian citizen, Vladimir Tyurin, a former partner of Voronenkov’s widow, Maria Maksakova, was suspected of organizing the murder. In March 2018, he was put on the wanted list in Ukraine.

On June 11, 2018, an indictment in the said criminal proceedings was sent to Kyiv’s Shevchenkivsky district court. The preparatory hearing was to begin on June 13.

However, on June 13, the Shevchenkivsky district court extended the arrest of the two defendants in the Voronenkov case for another two months. The indictment was sent back to the prosecutor for finalization.
