MOSCOW – Gazprom is ready to transport gas via Ukraine after 2024 for delivery under new contracts, Gazprom chief Alexei Miller said.

“Gazprom has always stressed its readiness to continue gas transit through Ukraine, including after 2024, based on economic feasibility and the technical condition of the Ukrainian gas transmission system,” he said.

“The matter of new volumes of gas purchases from Russia for transit through Ukraine should be resolved on market conditions and at market prices. For volumes of new purchases of Russian gas via the Ukrainian route exceeding current transit obligations, Gazprom is even ready to increase the volume of transit through Ukraine,” Miller said.

According to him, Gazprom has always approached Nord Stream 2 as an economic project.

“Its purpose is to ensure reliability, stability and diversification of gas supplies to the market of the European Union. It also means lower costs for the end consumer by providing a shorter transport route – the route to Germany is almost 2,000 kilometers shorter than through the Ukrainian pipeline system. And compliance with all the necessary modern environmental requirements. For instance, CO2 emissions via Nord Stream 2 are 5.6-fold lower than via the Ukrainian route, which is due to a smaller number of compressor stations,” the Gazprom chief said.

“We consider the participation of German partners in such work [on the continuation of Ukrainian transit] fully justified, given plans already outlined to decarbonize the EU economy,” Miller said.
