The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has sent a further request to the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office to extradite former President of the republic, ex-governor of the Odesa region of Ukraine Mikheil Saakashvili.
“On the issue of Mikheil Saakashvili the Georgian Prosecutor General’s Office sent a legal appeal to the Ukrainian side about his extradition to Georgia. Prosecutors of the two countries are actively cooperating with each other,” the statement of the Georgian supervisory authority says.
The Ukrainian side repeatedly refused to extradite Saakashvili to Georgia.
Meanwhile, Georgia’s Justice Minister Tea Tsulukiani said that four criminal cases had been opened against Saakashvili, and Tbilisi would demand his extradition from any country where he decides to stay.
On July 26, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko issued a decree revoking Saakashvili’s Ukrainian citizenship. The politician was in the United States at the time, after which he arrived in Poland with a Ukrainian passport and then went on to Lithuania.
Saakashvili promised that he would return to Ukraine on September 10. The politician expressed hope that his supporters would gather at the border near the checkpoint.
At the same time, Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yevhen Yenin said on August 11 that Saakashvili would be able to enter Ukraine only if he has a Ukrainian visa.
