The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees of Germany has refused to grant political asylum to a former member of parliament Oleksandr Onyshchenko, Deutsche Welle (DW) has reported, citing the press service of Germany’s Oldenburg Higher Regional Court.
According to the court ruling, early May, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees denied the Ukrainian ex-MP political asylum in Germany and called on him to leave the country immediately.
At the same time, after the decision of Oldenburg Higher Regional Court not to extradite Onyshchenko to Ukraine on May 27, he was released from the pretrial detention center, where he had spent almost six months.
Ukrainian lawyer Dominik Klauk told DW that Onyshchenko is presently at his ranch in Lower Saxony. According to the lawyer, his client appealed to the Osnabruck court about the denial of asylum and applied for permission to stay in Germany for the duration of the trial.
“Onyshchenko wants to stay in Germany,” Klauk said. However, according to the lawyer, if Germany refuses the ex-people’s deputy, he still has the opportunity to go to Russia, where he is a citizen.
In addition, Onyshchenko’s lawyer hopes that his client will be able to travel to other European countries.
As reported, on May 27, 20202 in Germany, the Oldenburg Higher Regional Court refused the extradition of Onyshchenko to Ukraine.
