Half of Ukrainians (50.1%) do not regret the collapse of the USSR, but every third (33.5%) does.

According to a question conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) at the end of May, among voters of President Volodymyr Zelensky, 52.7% do not regret the collapse of the USSR, and 28.7% regret it.

Among voters of potential candidates for the presidency, voters of the co-chair of the Opposition Platform – For Life faction led by Yuriy Boyiko, more than 81.5% regret it, compared to 9.7% who don’t. Among supporters of former President Petro Poroshenko, 3.8% regret it and 88.2% do not. In the case of voters of the leader of Batkivschyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko, 39.3% regret and 38.9% do not regret the collapse of the USSR.

Similar tendencies are also observed among the voters of the respective parties. Some 53.6% of voters of the Servant of the People Party do not regret the collapse of the USSR, while 28.4% regret it. Some 83.2% of voters of Opposition Bloc – For Life regret the collapse of the USSR, while 93.9% of voters of European Solidarity Party do not regret it.

If in the western Ukraine, the overwhelming majority of the population do not regret (69% versus 15%), in central regions of Ukraine the ratio is 51% to 32%. In southern and eastern regions, those who regret the collapse of the USSR predominate: 41.5-49% depending on the region compared to 35-39% of those who do not regret.

Some 34.7% of respondents believe that Ukraine’s inclusion in the USSR did more good than harm, compared to 47.6% in 2013.

From May 24 to May 31, 2020, KIIS conducted a CATI survey (computer-assisted telephone interviews) based on a random selection of mobile phone numbers. The sample is representative of the adult population of Ukraine aged 18 years and older). The sample does not include Russia-occupied territories of eastern Ukraine and Russia-occupied Crimea. Some 2,000 interviews were conducted.

The statistical error of the sample (with a probability of 0.95 and taking into account the design effect 1.1) does not exceed: 2.2% – for indicators close to 50%, 2.1% – for indicators close to 25%, 1, 4% – for indicators close to 10%.
