Along with millions of people, the war in Ukraine’s east has displaced more than a dozen universities from the region. The institutions that have remained in occupied Donbas are largely unrecognized, both internationally and in Ukraine. But for years now, universities from both occupied and government-controlled parts of the country, as well as Russia, have been fighting for school graduates from the Donbas. Spektr looked at why some students chose universities in Ukrainian government-controlled territory, while others went to Russia, and others still chose to stay at home and study at educational institutions whose diplomas will only be recognized in the occupied territories.
