You're reading: Hundreds of coal miners protesting near Ukrainian Rada

As many as 1,000 people have gathered near the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada to demand back pay for their work in the coal mining industry, an Interfax correspondent reported from the scene.

The protesters are banging helmets on the pavement to create noise. Some are holding banners demanding their pay. Protesters are also carrying symbols of the Independent Unions of Ukrainian Miners, the Lysychanskvuhillia coal company, and other organizations.

Police have deployed specially equipped units around the building.
