You're reading: Hungary may include language issue into Eastern Partnership declaration

Hungary may insist on the inclusion of the language issue in the final declaration of the Eastern Partnership summit, the Radio Liberty correspondent in Brussels, Rikard Jozwiak, said.

“Hungary might insist on adding language about Ukraine’s language law in the final EaP declaration [referring to Article 7 of the Law “On Education”] of the Eastern Partnership summit,” he wrote on his Twitter page on October 5.

As reported, on September 28 the law “On Education” came into force. The law holds that the national language, Ukrainian, is the language of the educational process in educational institutions, but in accordance with the educational program, one or more subjects can be taught in two or more languages, namely in the national language, English, or other official languages of the European Union.

Persons belonging to national minorities are guaranteed the right to learn in their native language along with the Ukrainian language in separate classes (groups) of municipally owned institutions of preschool and primary education.

The Hungarian Foreign Ministry said on September 26 about the country’s intention to block the rapprochement between Ukraine and the EU because of the law on education.

On September 28, the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine sent the law “On Education” for examination to the “Venice Commission.”
