The Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine together with state-owned enterprise Ukrvodshliakh and the general contractor of the construction provided the completion of the overhaul of Kaniv shipping lock and it is planned to fully open navigation on the Dnipro River on June 1.

The Ministry of Infrastructure said in a statement on its website on Thursday, May 28, with reference to Infrastructure Minister Vladyslav Krykliy, that the full opening of navigation on the Dnipro River will occur ten days earlier than planned.

Krykliy said that the shipping locks of the Dnipro cascade were constructed more than 50 years ago, and their overhaul was delayed from the 1990s due to a lack of public funds.

“The decision to repair Kaniv shipping lock was made in 2018, but the work was not carried out on time. Only after the intervention of the ministry and the replacement of the management of Ukrvodshliakh, we found the opportunity to finish the overhaul,” Krykliy said.

He also said that further financing of maintenance, reconstruction, overhaul, technical re-equipment and security of navigable hydraulic structures is planned at the expense of the State Fund for Inland Waterways Development, the creation of which is provided for by bill No. 1182-1-d.
