You're reading: Joint Forces Operation HQ – Russian-back militants already violated ‘school truce’ twice

Less than hours into the so-called “school truce” beginning on Aug. 29 in the east of Ukraine, Russian-backed militants fired on Ukrainian forces two times.

In a Facebook post on Aug. 29, the press service of the Joint Forces Operation wrote, “Since Wednesday midnight, Russian-led forces have mounted two attacks from heavy machine guns on the Ukrainian positions outside the villages of Hnutove and Talakivka.”

Units of the Joint Forces fired back to suppress the enemy’s attacks. Ukrainian intelligence reports that three militants on the Russian side were killed.

The Russian and Ukrainian sides agreed to a cease-fire as children return to school, to take effect on Aug. 29 at 12:01 am, at a meeting of the Trilateral Contact Group in Minsk, on Aug. 22.

According to the press service of the Joint Forces Operation (JFO) headquarters, militants also opened fire on the positions of the Ukrainian armed forces 32 times, including with the use of illegal heavy weapons, on Aug. 28.

In the press service wrote, “The militants of illegal armed units fired guided missiles from infantry fighting vehicles, grenade launchers, heavy machine guns and small arms, and in separate directions – from tanks, 122 mm barrels and 82 and 120 mm mortar shells … No casualties among the Ukrainian troops have been reported over the past day.”

Russian occupation forces opened aimed fire on Ukrainian forces defending no less than 17 localities in Donbas and Luhansk regions. They attacked the village of Lebedynske using tanks.
