Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said that the political directors of foreign ministries of the Normandy Four countries will gather in September to discuss the deployment of UN peacekeepers to Donbas.

‘Of course, we are talking about the resumption of our conversations in the Normandy format. Another meeting will be held in September. First, the political directors will discuss the peacekeeping concept,” Klimkin told journalists in Kyiv on Aug. 22.

He recalled that a couple of days ago he spoke about this with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas. And intends to discuss the topic in the near future with his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian.

According to Klimkin, after this meeting the decision will be made whether to organize an additional meeting at the ministerial level.

‘If we see that there are enough important points for discussion, and most importantly, that we can advance, we will speak,’ he said.

According to him, he and his counterparts are considering various ideas of such a meeting, in particular, as part of the UN General Assembly.

‘There are also several other ideas, but now we are working on key issues. This is security, the liberation of Ukrainians, political prisoners and hostages, and, of course, how we see the sequence of the deployment of a peacekeeping operation, its mandate. We are now trying to decide on these topics – what we have today, and when we can move forward,’ Klimkin said.
