You're reading: Kyiv activists accuse Zelensky of inaction to protect cultural heritage

Public activists in Kyiv appealed to President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky with a demand to ensure the preservation of the monument of national importance – Hostyny Dvir.

The text of an appeal was published by public activist Ihor Lutsenko on Facebook.

The activists accused the president’s team of inaction to protect the cultural heritage and ignoring the interests of Kyiv community.

“It will soon be two years since the new government team has all the levers to save the object of state property – the monument of national importance Hostyny Dvir. This building, despite numerous court decisions, is still controlled by unknown persons for unclear reasons and dilapidates further, being the source of an emergency man-made situation in the historical center of Kyiv,” the activists said in the appeal to the president.

The activists recalled the promises to allocate funds for the restoration of Hostyny Dvir under the Big Restoration program, and stated that instead of solving the problem, the shifting of blame and responsibility from one official to another continues, while each next winter causes even more damage to the building.

“The struggle of Kyiv residents for Hostyny Dvir has been going on since 2012. Since 2014, the community has also raised funds for conservation, but everything was hampered at first by the inaction of the previous government, and now by the current one. We ask you not to test the patience of Kyiv residents and all Ukrainians and intervene in this scandalous situation,” the activists say.

The authors of the appeal promise that if the situation does not change by the Independence Day, the activists will move on to mass actions.

“Kyiv resident are losing patience. If by the Independence Day everything remains as in previous years, if we continue to hear only words from the Minister of Culture, then we reserve the right to direct actions that will be aimed at the reputation of the relevant ministries and the government as a whole. We will not tolerate such disregard for the interests of the capital’s community any longer – may the shame befall those who deserve it,” the appeal reads.

The appeal to Zelensky has already been signed by Oleh Sentsov, the NGO Initiative for St. Andrew’s Passage, the Center for Urban Development, the National Center for Human Rights, the NGO Movement of Ukrainian IDPs and others. The collection of signatures continues.
