You're reading: Kyiv court arrests Yanukovych in absentia

The Pechersky District Court of Kyiv has rendered another decision on the detention of ex-President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych in the case of the organization of mass killings on the Maidan (Kyiv Independence square).

“To apply with respect to Yanukovych … a preventive measure in the form of detention in the framework of pretrial investigation for a period up to July 7, 2020,” the court ruling announced on May 12 says.

Thus, the court granted the investigation’s motion which requested that a preventive measure be taken in the form of detention.

Earlier, the Pechersky court had already ruled in absentia arrest of Yanukovych. On May 4, the court chose a preventive measure to Yanukovych in the form of detention in the case of power grab, satisfying the motion of the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO).

The PGO said that the arrest in absentia of Yanukovych would allow the extradition process to begin and apply for permission of a special investigation.
